Topic:
Asia-Pacific High Technology Sector: New Trends And Challenges Amid Rising External Pressures
Since the end of the 2010s there has been a global rise of protectionism, trade and new technological "wars" – with Asia Pacific nations among key targets. However, the process didn`t stop or even created some new impetus for regional growth. Adjustments of foreign direct investment flows (including ones from China), reactive policies, technological, competence and other factors resulted in industrial growth and supportive cross-border economic activities (including informal market or economic “alliances”) – reflecting both established (path dependance) and new trends. This is most evident in the high-tech industry. In microelectronics one may see rise of what may be labeled as Asian “Silicon Triangle” (Singapore, Malaysia, Viet Nam), and China as a new center of future GVCs. In biopharmaceuticals, spectacular developments in RoK, China, Singapore and other nations indicate prospects for growth of new GVCs and clusters. However, new challenges also arise. Beyond dealing with the trade and technology restrictions, it is crucial to advance further economic integration and coordination in the APEC region, from harmonizing investments and supporting environmental actions and up to cooperation in the area of Artificial Intelligence. New political and expert actions are required, including research and elaborating new approaches for the region's prosperity.
