Between 2000 and 2015, Deputy Director-General and Assistant Director-General for Strategic Planning of UNESCO. From 1975-2000 with the UN Secretariat and UNDP in New York. Simultaneously, he served for 10 years as Executive Coordinator of the InterAction Council of former Heads of State and Government.

Advisor to several international initiatives, such as the Africa Leadership Forum, Nigeria, the Center for China&Globalization, and the Eco-Forum Global (EFG) and its International Advisory Council in Guiyang, China. Since 2019, Chairman of the Advisory Committee of the International Center for Creativity and Sustainable Development ((CCSD), Beijing.

Currently also Honorary Professor at the South China University of Technology in Guangzhou; the Guangdong University of Foreign Studies; and the Shandong University for Arts and Design in Jinan; as well as member of the International Advisory Board of Global Engagement of Tongji University in Shanghai and Non-resident Senior Fellow, The Center for International Relations, Qianhai (Shenzhen).

Being a Fellow of the World Academy of Arts and Sciences, he also is a Board member of the German Association for the UN, and several cultural associations, such as the Friends of the German Pavilion at the Venice Biennale.He holds an MA and PhD in economics from the University of Konstanz, Germany.
